Society

SOCIETY
The Society concern is incorporated for non-commercial activities and usually for promotion of charity. It is a body of individuals associating together to work for social welfare and undertake public spirited activities. It is although an unincorporated body, but on registration it is governed under Societies Registration Act, 1860 or specific state law, if any. Registration under Section 80G is required so that donor can get the benefit of deductions for donations made.
Some of the matters included and not limited to for which registration of society can be done are:
- Charity for social welfare
- Improvement of the natural environment and compassion for living creatures
- Establishment of military orphan funds
- Advancement of science, literature and Indian industry
- Encouragement to khadi and village industry
- Development of rural areas
- Dissemination of social economic education
- Promotion of sports, games or fine arts
- Formation or maintenance of art galleries
- Diffusion of political education or another useful knowledge
- Creation and maintenance of libraries or reading forums open to public
- Establishment or maintenance of public museums
- Accretion of natural history, mechanical and philosophical inventions, instruments, or designs
Few of the matters stated above are State specific and others are applicable to all societies in India.

Key Points
- Minimum 7 individuals are required
- Foreigners, companies and other registered societies can also become members of the Society
- Elect the Governing Body of the proposed society including-
• President;
• Secretary;
• Treasurer;
• Executive Members
- To conduct an Annual General Meeting (AGM) once a year and mandatorily file Annual Return and Audited Accounts thereafter
- Accounts of the Society is required to be audited by a Chartered Accountant every year

Requirements
- Name for the proposed society (should not be identical/similar to name of the existing society and should not suggest to be related to Government)
- Precise details of the members and address of registered office of proposed society-
• Occupational details (only for members);
• Rural area or Urban area;
• Block/ Municipality/Municipal Corporation
- Details of the objects of the society
- Name of the members of the Governing Body
- List of all members
Requisite Documents
- Proof of Identity and Residence (of all members) (whatever available)-
• PAN Card;
• Passport;
• Voter Id Card;
• Driving License;
• Utility Bills;
• Aadhar Card;
• Bank Statement
- 3 passport size photographs of proposed Governing Body
